Perth is the capital city of Western Australia and is located in a favourable position for road trips down south or up the north coast. Throughout this blog, we will be covering our favourite road trip destinations that are located in the southern parts of the state. Unfortunately, we can only touch on a few but there is definitely not a shortage of places to see and things to do.
Perth > Margaret River
Distance: 270km from Perth
Duration: 3 hours drive
Best for: This little slice of Western Australian paradise is sure to satisfy a range of travellers’ holiday dreams as there is a wide selection of activities and attractions on offer. The main drawcard to the region has got to be the wineries and boy do they have some to choose from! A few notable wineries to mention and ones you should definitely add to the itinerary are Vasse Felix, Voyager Estate and Leeuwin Estate. If sitting back and enjoying a glass of vino is not quite your style but you do want to stay in the realm of eating and drinking, why not try the Margaret River Gin Distillery or the Berry Farm (side note, you can drink wine here also).
If your travel companion is more of a daredevil, check out the scenic flights available in the area. I could imagine the green rolling hills from the Margaret River wine country into the azure waters of the Western Australian coastline would be dream-like from the air.

Perth > Leeuwin
Distance: 323km from Perth
Duration: 3.5 hours drive
Best for: If you travel a little further down the coast of Western Australia you will come across Cape Leeuwin. It is here you will find the Cape Leeuwin Lighthouse perched on the most south-westerly point of Australia and with it being one of the tallest in Australia, it is definitely a must see attraction. Visitors are able to take tours up to the top of the lighthouse and you will learn alot about the rich maritime history of the region. The top of the tower boasts spectacular views of the Southern ocean colliding with the Indian and if you are lucky enough to visit between May and September, you may even catch a glimpse of the humpback whales making their annual migration.
If you are wanting to camp down near the lighthouse your best bet would be Flinders Bay Caravan Park and a site there will only set you back about $43 for a powered site but pricing is seasonal so be sure to check out the website for the most up to date prices. Another great location for camping down here is Skippy’s Rock. Skippy’s Rock is located in the Stokes National Pack and only has about nine sites available at any time so if you are looking for an exclusive spot that is off the beaten track then this is the place for you. It is also free to camp here but National Parks fees apply.

Perth > D’Entrecasteaux National Park
Distance: 377km from Perth
Duration: 4.5 hours drive
Best for: D’Entrecasteaux National Park stretches along the south coast in between the towns of Augusta and Walpole and due to the vast size of the national park, there’s plenty to see and do! Salmon Beach is located just west of Windy Harbour and often (as the name suggests) gets slammed by both winds and swell from the Southern Ocean. If you are looking for adventure then this beach will surely not disappoint as the position of the beach puts you in a favourable position to take advantage of the surfing opportunities. This beach is located about 1 and quarter hours from Pemberton and it is one of few sites in the Park that’s accessible by a sealed road so if you are travelling in a No Worries Campervan, then this will work just fine!
One of the most impressive and truly remarkable locations in D’Entrecasteaux National Park is Black Point. Black Point was formed many many years ago when lava poured from the Darling Scarp and cooled slowly at the ocean. This resulted in a massive outcrop of hexagonal basalt columns to be formed and over time slowly eroded.
Perth > Elephant Rocks
Distance: 440km from Perth
Duration: 5 hour drive
Best for:As the name suggests Elephant Rocks look exactly like massive elephants wading around the shallows of the Southern Ocean and they are located right next to the tranquil beach that is Greens Pool. You will find both of these locations nestled in the William Bay National Park which is about a 15 minute drive from the township of Denmark. Greens Pool is the perfect destination in the warmer months for a swim in the calm crystal blue water and the beach is fairly protected from the elements so it is definitely best for families.

Perth > Frenchman Bay
Distance: 435k from Perth
Duration: 5 hour drive
Best for: Frenchman Bay is just a short 20 minute drive from the town of Albany and like Greens Pool, this is the perfect spot for families as the water is shallow, pristine and protected from large swells. Lovers of the water will absolutely adore this place as it is a great spot for a swim or snorkel and the wreck of the HMAS Perth provides an interesting artificial reef for divers to explore.
Camping spots in the area are relatively abundant so you can rest assured you will be able to find something that is just a short drive away. Cosy Corner Campground is located about 40 minutes drive from Frenchman Bay and between Albany and Denmark. This campground offers free camping but you are not able to book so it really does come down to luck if you are going to be able to secure a spot here.
